Our History

Lawrence Optometrists was established in 1984 by Mrs Margaret Lawrence, when Dixey’s, a chain of Opticians decided to close their East Grinstead branch down.  Originally situated on the ground floor of Constitutional Buildings, there has been an Opticians in the building since the early part of the 20th century.

This grade II listed building itself has had quite a chequered history! Originally built as a gentlemen’s club around 1886, we have photos showing where carriages stopped outside as well as the steps leading up to the upper entrance to the club. At one time part of the lower building was also used as a morgue with a tunnel underneath the High Street from the old cottage hospital.

In 1985 the practice re-located to the upper ground floor where it remains as an independent rooms practice focusing on personal service, clinical eye health, and a hand-picked range of spectacles that offers quality and choice in eyewear.

Our team uses a holistic approach making sure we consider your individual lifestyle needs. The priority is the health of your eyes and we use a combination of the latest technology and thorough assessments to manage any conditions found.

We were the first practice in East Grinstead to have a camera to photograph the back of the eye in 1994, and in 2010, were the first in the area to invest in Optical Coherence Tomography which provides microscopic detail for the earliest detection of eye disease. We are accredited to co-manage eye diseases such as glaucoma with Queen Victoria Hospital and all our staff take part in further education.

In 2009 Mrs. Lawrence semi-retired and the practice was taken over by the current owner Mr. Irfaan Adamally, who was a Principal Optometrist at Coventry Hospital’s Eye Department. He is a member of the British Association of Behavioural Optometrists and specialises in Optometric Vision Therapy, Sports Vision and Colourimetry. He is also a member of British Contact Lens Association and specialises in contact lens fitting and managing dry eye.
